Perhaps the most widely recognized image of America's Revolutionary War is the painting by Emanuel Leutze of George Washington crossing the Delaware on Christmas Day in 1776. Copies of the painting can be seen in many public buildings, including the White House, and numerous class rooms across the country. It even appeared on a commemorative stamp in 1976.

While an inspirational image of an gallant leader setting off on a daring raid against a superior enemy, Leutze's 1851 painting contains little in the way of historical fact. The boat, flag, background, and even the ice in the river are all incorrect.

Another well-know artist has taken up the challenge to depict the event more accurately. Based on months of research, Mort Kunstler has recently complete his own rendering of the event. His painting more closely reflects the historic facts as we know them today. Mr. Kunstler's painting was unveiled to the public for the first time at the New York Historical Society's museum in New York on December 26.

On Wednesday February 22nd, Washington's birthday, the Heritage Trail Association is offering a bus tour to New York City to view both paintings. The tour will leave from the Van Horne House at 9:30 and proceed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where the recently-restored, original painting by Leutze is the center piece of the new American Wing Galleries. Our group will be accompanied by a museum guide for a two-hour tour.

After a lunch break, the group will be taken to the New York Historical Society's museum to view the Kunstler painting and visit the Historical Society's American Paintings collection. At the end of the tour, the bus will return to the Van Horne House by 4:30 pm.

This is perfect opportunity to visit two of New York's finest museums without the hassle of New York's public transportation.

The Van Horne House is located at 941 East Main Street, Bridgewater (across from Patriots Ballpark). The tour is $50 per person, which includes transportation and museum fees. Lunch is not included.

Space is limited and reservations are required. Call (732) 356-8856 for reservations, or sign up online: register.
